Since 1994, West Kootenay EcoSociety works to preserve wild places, air and water for future generations; to take action to reduce the crisis of climate change; and to promote sustainable local food systems. This position will focus on delivering our Markets in order to promote sustainable food systems. Working with our staff, volunteers, local businesses, local farmers and artisans, and the City of Nelson, EcoSociety’s Markets Coordinator will organize, promote, and operate the farmers’ markets in Nelson on Saturdays at Cottonwood Falls Park and Wednesdays in downtown Nelson. The Markets Coordinator will also organize, promote, and operate Marketfest, Gardenfest, and other annual special market events. This position is responsible for working with local farmers and artisans to ensure vibrant, diverse and local food-forward markets. Markets run in all weather conditions and market days can be long, very physical, and filled with public relations, coordinating vendors, managing volunteers, and troubleshooting challenges for market attendees and vendors.

The Market Coordinator will also administer a coupon program that is delivered annually through the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. This coupon program connects low-income families and seniors with fresh produce and foods from local farmers. The Coordinator will also work with vendors to attract market goers and reduce market waste.

This position will be based out of EcoSociety’s downtown Nelson office, and requires the Markets Coordinator to work every Saturday and Wednesday from June-October.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Markets Coordinator will:

  • Develop and maintain digital and in-person management systems to organize market logistics and vendors;
  • Manage the markets budget and accurately track spending and revenue;
    Work with the City of Nelson, local businesses, and tourism organizations on market logistics, increase attendance, and promote the markets;
  • Manage volunteers and staff to deliver successful markets;
  • Build relationships with experts within and outside the region to promote, enhance, and connect EcoSociety’s Markets with other local food initiatives;
  • Maintain relationships and contact information in EcoSociety’s database;
  • Develop and post content on EcoSociety’s website, social media and email list;
  • Develop images and videos to promote markets;
  • Participate in organizational fundraising;
  • Participate in organizational planning and staff activities;
  • Integrate Our Markets with EcoSociety’s other programs;
  • Support organizational administration – a larger portion of work could be devoted to this role depending on candidate’s skill set, previous experience and interest.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience managing, working at, or volunteering at a Farmers’ Market is preferred;
  • At least 2 years experience running a program, business, market or event in related field;
  • Physically fit and able to lift heavy objects safely throughout each market day;
  • Outstanding communicator with strong interpersonal skills, and experience successfully resolving conflicts and challenges;
  • Outgoing personality, excellent listening skills and drive to connect with people of diverse backgrounds;
  • Connected to local community or strong desire to build connections in the community;
  • Team player and problem solver, but must be able to work independently;
  • Experience working for non-profits;
  • Experience working with media, social media and developing external communications or marketing;
  • Experience managing budgets successfully;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Expert-intermediate knowledge of: Microsoft Office, Google Drive, email management;
  • Experience using databases and managing data;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and work long market days in all weather conditions and maintain a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and every Saturday and Wednesday June-October;
  • Valid drivers’ license, and personal vehicle for use is ideal;
  • And willing to make at least a 2-year commitment to this position with the EcoSociety.

The successful candidate will work 25-35 hours per week, depending on availability and the candidate’s unique skill set.
