Now Hiring: EcoSociety’s Communications Coordinator

Working with our staff and volunteers, West Kootenay EcoSociety’s Communications Coordinator will develop and implement communications strategies to reach more people for the West Kootenay EcoSociety’s campaigns and projects, build our donors, and mobilize supporters to take action on the big climate, conservation and food issues in the West Kootenays.

This year is shaping up to be a big year at the EcoSociety with even more communities set to join 100% Renewable Kootenays, a new old growth forest education and outreach program being launched, and Our Markets being better than ever, all while celebrating our 25th Anniversary. The Communications Coordinator will play a central role in all these programs, while planning for the future.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Coordinator will:

  • Develop and implement communications plans with EcoSociety staff and key volunteers;
  • Oversee and manage projects and staff supporting communications development and implementation plans;
  • Produce materials for campaigns and projects, including brochures, posters, handbills, publications, infographics, social media content, annual reports, and liaise with printers and designers;
  • Draft and edit written communications, including emails, letters, op-eds, letters to editors, fundraising appeals, scripts, position papers, and contribute to message development;
  • Build EcoSociety’s reputation and brand;
  • Support organizing efforts, with digital and physical tools and communications;
  • Work with traditional media, including sending media releases and advisories, pitching stories to journalists and responding to media inquiries, promoting events, maintaining media relationships and contact lists, and tracking media success;
  • Manage EcoSociety’s social media accounts to build our audience while promoting programs and projects;
  • Maintain EcoSociety’s website content, design and function with staff, contractors and volunteers, including ensuring engaging content, monitoring performance using analytics, and troubleshooting;
  • Run communications on budget;
  • Participate in organizational planning, fundraising, and staff activities;
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively with volunteers and partner organizations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Passionate about EcoSociety’s mission and programs;
  • Completed post-secondary education in journalism, communications, marketing, graphic design or equivalent;
  • At least two years experience working in communications field;
  • Experience working with the media and managing media events;
  • Successfully developed and implemented communications strategies with traditional media, social media, and website and physical material components;
  • Understanding of climate, conservation and food issues in the West Kootenays, BC, and beyond;
  • Experience working or volunteering with a non-profit;
  • Outstanding communicator with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Excellence in writing and editing clear messages, persuasive and engaging content across media platforms;
  • Outgoing personality, excellent listening skills and drive to connect with people of diverse backgrounds;
  • Connected to local community or strong desire and plan to build connections in the community;
  • Team player and problem solver, but must be able to work independently;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Expert-intermediate knowledge of: Microsoft Office, Google Drive, email management, WordPress CMS, social media platforms, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Basic skills in photography, videography, and graphic design;
  • Experience using databases and managing data;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and work long days when necessary while maintaining a positive attitude;
  • Valid drivers’ license.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience delivering media trainings or preparing others for media work;
  • Experience using CiviCRM;
  • Experience working in non-profit campaign setting;
  • Willing to make at least a two year commitment to this position at EcoSociety;

Terms and conditions:

The Communications Coordinator position is a 0.8 FTE (30 hrs/wk) position that may extend to 40 hrs/wk dependent on funding. The position is based out of West Kootenay EcoSociety’s newest office, opening soon in Trail, BC, but may be required to work out of EcoSociety’s Nelson office occasionally. This position involves some regional travel and some work on evening and weekends. This salary for this position is $39,000-$42,000 pro-rated, depending on experience. The initial contract for this position is ending December 31, 2019 and will be renewed depending on funding. The ideal candidate would be able to start in April.
